HOW TO BE AN ACTIVE BYSTANDER IN TACKLING VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls)

Please be aware this event is on multiple dates - you are required to attend both

What is it?

Active Bystander Training gives you a range of tools to safely respond to potentially harmful situations such as sexual harassment in public places. By attending the training you can gain the skills, confidence, knowledge and practical tools and techniques to intervene skilfully and safely in a range of situations, whether with a stranger or with a friend.

That could be diffusing it, offering help to the victim or calling on others to help you out. It doesn’t have to be confrontational – a few calm words can make the difference. When we intervene skilfully, we encourage others to do so too, sparking positive culture change and preventing violence against women and girls, making everyone feel safer in public spaces.

No previous knowledge of VAWG, Domestic Abuse, or Bystander interventions is needed.

This training is funded by Kim McGuinness, the Northumbria Police & Crime Commissioner, as part of her ongoing commitment to women’s safety.

This course involves 2 x 1/2 days, one week apart, covering the following content:

Session 1: Introducing the bystander will give learners increased ability to

  • recognise forms of VAWG
  • understand the root causes and the bystander effect
  • feel an increased sense of responsibility to act
  • learning about misperceptions and myths linked to VAWG

Session 2: Practical Interventions will

  • Understanding harms and their impact
  • deepen understanding of the root causes
  • enable learners to engage in practice scenarios, whole group and break out discussions
  • take away strategies on how to handle interventions with increased confidence, awareness, skills and tools to take action
